Another Winning Season For Ridge Fencing
The Ridge High School Fencing Team has completed another outstanding season! Both the boys and girls teams finished the season with winning records. The boys were 11-2 overall and the girls closed an exceptional season with a winning record of 10-4.
On February 21st, the Girls Team faced cross town rival Bernards High for the Bronze Medal Match at the State Championships at Morris Hills High School. It was exactly the kind of match every sports fan loves to see with multiple lead changes and a nail-biting finish. In the final bout, Ridge claimed victory. For the first time in Ridge Girls fencing history the team secured the State Championship Bronze Medal.
For the fourth time in five years, the Boys Team secured a spot in the State Finals. In 2015 and 2016 Ridge Boys were crowned State Champs. On February 21, Ridge faced 2017 State Champion St. Peter’s Prep. The match was closely contested, with many bouts going to 4-4 and OT. Ridge found themselves down 2-7 after the first round but rallied in the second winning 6 bouts pulling the score up to 8-10. Ridge kept it close all the way to the final three bouts during which St. Peter’s finally won its 14th point. The final score of the meet was 14-13 with Ridge taking the State Championship Silver Medal.
With over 50 varsity fencing teams in New Jersey, Ridge consistently ranks near the top.
